Tooth Colored Fillings

Are you frustrated because you brush and floss regularly and still have cavities? Dental caries (cavities) can be one of the most frustrating oral diseases for patients. For some patients brushing and flossing is not quite enough to keep the disease at bay. Byron C. Scott, DMD in Mobile, Alabama can help get your dental decay under control. Additionally, if you do require fillings, Dr. Byron can place beautifully matched tooth-colored fillings. No need to have a mouth full of metal fillings; composite fillings are unnoticeable and will not get in the way of your smile.

Dental decay explained

Patients do not always get cavities for the reasons they may think. An oversimplified explanation is that we eat too much sugar and don’t brush and floss enough. However there are many things that lead to your risk of decay. The primary culprits are:

Lack of saliva

Saliva is one of the primary ways our teeth are protected from decay. When we don’t have enough saliva, our teeth are more vulnerable. Things that affect saliva flow include medication use, oral appliances, and systemic disease.

Genetics

The genetic component is still being researched; however, there is growing evidence of a strong genetic component to the disease.

Diet

Diet plays a large role in your risk of decay. Snacking often and eating sugary, starchy, or acidic foods can increase your risk.

pH balance

When your mouth spends too much time below the pH of 5.5, cavity-causing bacteria thrive. It is important to pay attention to the pH of mouth rinses, toothpaste and foods, and drinks.

Too much or the wrong kind of bacteria

The thin layer of bacteria on your teeth is a complex network, made up of both good and bad bacteria. When you have too much of the wrong bacteria or an overload of all bacteria it can put you at risk.

After a thorough evaluation, Dr. Scott will determine the reasons for your decay issues and will advise you of the best options to reduce or eliminate the risk factors and causes of your dental decay. A preventative and corrective plan will be designed just for you so that the dentistry that you have done can be maintained in a stable and healthy state for years to come.
